Length Control Bowling Drill

Activity 2:

25 mins

Method:

This drill is adapted from a golf putting drill i came across years ago to control distance of putts.

Set up a line across the wicket (approximately half way) and another at the stumps at the batters end. All deliveries must be between these lines!

  1.  Bowl your first ball as short as you can, without landing it short of the first line.

  2. Put a marker down where the ball landed.

  3. Bowl your next ball trying to land it just slightly fuller than the previous delivery > move the marker forward to where it landed.

  4. Each delivery, you are trying to bowl just slightly fuller than the ball before it > move the marker forward to where it landed each time.

  5. If you land your delivery short of your previous delivery, it's GAME OVER

  6. If you land a delivery past the line at the batting stumps, it's GAME OVER

  7. See how many balls you can bowl in a row and then try to beat your best score

This drill is fantastic for fine tuning your control of length. Being able to control length is essential, particularly in the modern game where the margins for error as a bowler are so small.

Ensure you bowl with your proper action - if you're a fast bowler, bowl fast - if you're a spinner, bowl to turn the ball. Don't just try and place the ball for the sake of scoring more points in the drill!

Cricket Ball, Cones, Stumps

Activity 3:

O's and X's Bowling Drill

25 mins

Method:

This drill is fantastic for creating a little bit of pressure on the bowlers to hit their targets as it is a competitive target hitting game.

The pressure ramps up during this game and applies a similar pressure to situations you may find yourself in when bowling overs at the end of a game where the stakes are high and you need to be able to rely on your ability to handle pressure and hit your targets.

Teaching Points:

  • Focus on the target that you are aiming at as you approach the crease

  • Ensure that you bowl your proper bowling action, don't sacrafice speed or spin for accuracy just to win the game. You need to be able to bowl your absolute best deliveries accurately under pressure!

  • Trust your action and trust your processes (if you have them) when the pressure increases

Equipment:

Hoops, Cricket Balls, Cones, Stumps
