Introduction to Dodgeball

Introduction to Dodgeball

Children will learn the basic concept of Dodgeball and get used to the idea of being struck by a Dodgeball. Introduce some basic throwing technical points too.

Activity 1:

Circle Dodgeball

10 mins

Method:

  1. Mark out a circle in the middle of the area approximately 6 metres diameter

  2. Choose 1 player to start in the middle of the circle

  3. Everyone else is outside of the circle

  4. Give out dodgeballs (optional how many) to the players outside the circle

  5. Players on the outside have to throw the ball (from outside the circle) at the player in the middle and try to hit them.

  6. If you are the first player to hit the player in the middle, you swap with them.

  7. The new player in the middle has 3 seconds to get ready and then go again.

  8. The player in the middle will change very frequently and you have to keep a close eye on who has hit them to get the correct person in the middle

  9. This is a great game to play with a new group to help you learn names!

this game can transfer well to other sports such as cricket and football. you could make the middle circle a bit bigger and give the player in the middle a Cricket bat to protect themselves. Or the player in the middle could have a football and the players on the outside are trying to hit the ball instead of the person...

Teaching Points:

Equipment:

  • Markers / Spots / Cones to mark out circle

  • Dodgeballs

Asteroid Dodgeball

Activity 2:

15 mins

Method:

  1. Set up the room with a square in the middle made of cones, approx 10m x 10m

  2. Place a team on each side of the square

  3. Players can't come inside the square and must throw their ball from outside the square

  4. The aim is to stop the large ball from crossing the line of cones on your side of the square

  5. If the ball crosses the line on your side or anyone on your team touches the large ball, you lose a point

  6. Every team starts with 3 points. Play until a team is eliminated with 0 points

Teaching Points:

  • Throw with power - large step, opposite foot to throwing arm forward. Big backswing with the throwing arm, and use your front arm to aim and then pull into your side to start your upper body rotation

  • Throw with accuracy - ensure your front foot is stepping toward your target and that your front arm points at the target getting your shoulders side on to the target

  • Dodgeballs

  • Large Ball (Yoga Ball is ideal)

  • Markers / cones
