Activity 3:

Baseball (Cricket version)

30 mins

Method:

  1. Set up a baseball diamond (home, 1st , 2nd & 3rd base)

  2. You can either have a coach/player bowling underarm or someone bowling properly

  3. Split into 2 teams - one bats and one fields

  4. Batters bat at the home plate/base

  5. As per baseball rules - a batter has 3 strikes

  6. Batter must hit the ball forward between 1st and 3rd base for it to count as a 'hit'

  7. If they 'hit' the ball, they have got to run to first base and then decide if they can run further

  8. Fielders can run a batter out by getting the ball to fielder on a base before the batter gets there.

  9. The batter scores a run if they get all the way round to home base again without being run out (this can be in one go or over multiple batters turns)

  10. A home run is scored if the ball is struck over the back wall (or at an alternative predetermined target)

  11. Each team has 3 outs per innings, with batters rotating in a queue format throughout the game

  12. Decide at the start of the game how many innings you are going to do per team. 2 or 3 should be plenty depending on how many players you have per team.

  13. Batters can be out struck out, caught or run out

  14. If a bowler bowls 4 unhittable balls, the batter gets a free 'walk' to 1st base.

Teaching Points:

  • Batting: Be selective about what delivery you choose to hit and where you choose to hit it (look for gaps)
  • Batting: Running is important, you need to be aware of what is happening with other batters ahead of you before deciding whether to continue running or not as well as deciding if you think you can make it or not
  • Fielding: Think about a batters strengths and weaknesses and adjust fielding positions accordingly
  • Fielding: Where should you throw the ball? Stay one step ahead of the game, don't chase it. If you can't realistically throw the ball to the base where they are running before they reach it, throw to the next base instead.
