Dodgeball
Dodgeball
Children will learn the technique required for powerful and accurate overarm throwing
Children will be able to use tactics to be successful at Dodgeball games
Activity 1:
Canonball
15 mins
Method:
Mark out a long rectangle with a norrow end zone at each end, and enough space behind the sidelines for canonball throwers to throw from
All players are to line up on one of the end zones
Choose one player to be the canonballer. Their job is to throw the dodgeballs at the players when they run across the area. They must throw the balls from outside the sidelines!
At the start of the game, the coach is to call out different instructions for the players to cross, such as 'anyone wearing a red t-shirt' or 'anyone whose birthday is in January, February or March' etc.
Anyone that is called out in those instructions has to try and cross to the other side. If they get there, they have to stay there until all players have had the chance to cross.
If a player is hit by a dodgeball, they join the canonballer and get themselves a dodgeball.
When everyone has had the chance to cross, repeat the process back to the other side.
The game continues until everyone has been eliminated. The final player to be eliminated is the winner.

Cornerball Dodgeball
Activity 2:
15 mins
Method:
Split the hall into 4 equal areas
Place a hoop in the back of each of the corners as far back as you can safely go
Place a cone with a football on top of it, just in front of the hoop
Split into 4 teams and give each team a captain
The captain must choose a player to be a rescuer
The rescuer is safe when they are in their hoop but is out permanantly if they get hit when not in the hoop
Anyone else that gets eliminated during the game must sit or lay on the floor as a wounded soldier where they got hit or eliminated.
The rescuer can tag players to release them back into the game but will have to leave their hoop to do so.
The rescuer cannot release anyone once they have been eliminated themselves. Anyone hit after this point is out until the ball is knocked off the cone.
The aim of the game is to knock the other teams balls off their cones and defend yours.
You can either play this game until 3 teams have been eliminated (which may result in some players sat out for long periods, which is not ideal)
Or you can award a point to a team that knocks another teams ball off the cone. The team that are knocked out can then choose a new rescuer, replace their ball and join back in the game without any need to stop the game.
Teaching Points:
Use your body to shield your ball but if possible, catch balls that are thrown toward you or block them with another ball
Rescuers should scan for danger and release players as often as possible
Be proactive, the best form of defense is often to attack
