Activity 1

Baseball Cricket
Coach
All Coaches
Time
30 mins

Skills:

Matchplay, Decision Making, Running, Teamwork

Utilising other striking & fielding based games can make things a little more fun but also challenges you in different ways.

The sports share many similarities but the differences can be fun to learn and also help to enhance your skills.

Using Baseball to aid your cricket development is great for your running between the wickets, as it requires good anticipation and communication skills.

It is also great for fielding, as there is so much going on. You have decisions to make when fielding and trying to affect a run out. Stay one step ahead of the game and think ahead of the batters, otherwise you don’t stand a chance!

Activity 2

Run Up Channel
Coach
Ben Wyatt
Time
Each Group 15 mins (4 Groups)

Skills:

Fast Bowling, Run Up, Accuracy, Swing Bowling, Seam Bowling, Bowling

Create a channel to run up and bowl through out of cones or something similar.

The aim is to create a consistently straight run up and follow through to aid your accuracy.

We find that many bowlers fall away to the off side early in their follow through, which can lead to problems with consistency in the accuracy department and also lose you a bit of speed.

We also see some bowlers that change the angle of their approach at the very last moments before they bowl, which again can have a negative impact on accuracy.

Use this drill to ensure you do both run up and follow through towards the target.

Activity 3

Sweep Shot
Coach
Jess Humby
Time
Each Group 15 mins (4 Groups)

Skills:

Batting, Sweep Shot

Groove the techinque of your sweep shot by simplifying the feed. Use a drop feed or a bobble feed to really focus on your technical skills.

Think about the placement of your front foot in relation to the ball and the impact the line of it makes to the direction of your sweeps (foot leg side of the ball will go nearer mid wicket, foot toward the off-side of the ball will go finer toward backward square leg)

Get your hands nice and high in your backswing so that they flow slightly downward as they sweep toward the ball.

Try to reach forward with your chest and hands to contact the ball as close to the bounce as you can.

Maintain good balance throughout the strike by getting your feet/knee in a stable position and your head to remain level in the centre of your body position through the strike. Your core (stomach) muscles need to be very active for stability.

Activity 4

Time
Each Group 15 mins (4 Groups)

Activity 5

Theraband Front Arm Drill
Coach
Dan Brookes
Time
Each Group 15 mins (4 Groups)

Skills:

Fast Bowling, Front Arm, Swing Bowling, Seam Bowling, Bowling, Spin Bowling

Improve your consistency, accuracy and power with this simple yet very effective fast bowling drill.

You'll need a theraband (elasticated fitness band) to help you (or something similar) plus a partner to hold it for you.

The band should be held from behind you by your partner and then you should hold the other end of the band with your front arm. the band should line up over your bowling shoulder (right shoulder for a right arm bowler).

You don't need to run up during this drill, just go through your action from back foot contact point. The aim is to bring your front arm down with the band remaining over your bowling shoulder and not passing over your head to the other shoulder. The person holding the band should release the band as the ball is about to be released.

You can apply resistance to your front arm to increase the power that your front arm needs to produce, therefore helping to create a more powerful, yet consistent, bowling action.

Activity 6

Continuous Pairs Game
Coach
All coaches
Time
30 Minutes

Skills:

Matchplay, Running, Fielding

This indoor cricket game (can be done outdoors if altered slightly) is great for encouraging positive running and putting pressure on the fielders.

The fielders have to get a run out every ball in order to stop the batters scoring (there is no penalty to the batting team for being run out). This means the players get used to having to compose themselves to affect a run out.  It’s short and sharp. Each pair just faces 4 balls (rotate who has strike every ball regardless of how many runs you made). This is to ensure batters don’t get too tired to keep intensity nice and high.

Batters have to run every ball and there is no penalty if they are run out - so encourage them to keep on running until the fielders have hit the stumps.
